The second iteration of the Pitch AgriHack 2022 has been established by the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF), Heifer International, and Generation Africa.
The Pitch AgriHack program seeks out innovative youth-led businesses with technological solutions to problems with food security, to accelerate entrepreneurial growth and job creation in Africa’s agricultural sector. The most significant businesses are given cash grants, media exposure, and investor exposure.
“Pitch AgriHack aims to promote smart technology and digital occupations that are appealing to young people. According to Dickson Naftali, head of Generation Africa, “this competition calls on the creative minds of Africa to empower themselves and their communities by utilizing and developing ground-breaking technology in the agrifood sector.
“We anticipate a promising future for African youth. Generation Africa is working relentlessly to remove the barriers that have historically kept young people from seizing possibilities in the agriculture and food value chain, with the aid of partners like Heifer International.
Six winners in three open competition categories will each get $45,000 in prizes during Pitch AgriHack 2022.
Adesuwa Ifedi, Senior Vice President for Africa Programs at Heifer International, stated that the organization “believes that agriculture can be a major generator of economic growth and employment across Africa.”
“The key to realizing this promise lies in African youth. Their inventions will revolutionize the agriculture and food industries, creating new jobs and boosting food security. We were pleased by the young agritech entrepreneurs who presented their ventures during the competition last year, and we are looking forward to the fresh developments that 2022 will offer.
“According to Dr. Agnes Kalibata, President of AGRA and former Special Envoy to the UN Food Systems Summit, “there is a hope—a very real hope—that the youth of Africa will abandon the legacy issues brought about in the food system over the past 100 years and develop tech-enabled, environmentally friendly solutions that accelerate Africa’s food production capacity to create jobs and make the continent self-sufficient.
The competition for 2022 is open to African founders or cofounders of technology-based and digital services enterprises operating in the agriculture sector, aged 18 to 40.
An experienced jury will choose the top 12 candidates, and after that, there will be an awards event where the three category winners and three runner-ups will get cash grants to expand their enterprises.
Previous Pitch AgriHack competitions have seen a significant presence from the manufacturers of agricultural equipment, agricultural drone services for precision farming, data and analytics providers, mobile apps, online crowdfunding and finance platforms, e-commerce and logistics services, and more.
The Top 12 candidates will compete in a business pitching competition at the African Green Revolution Forum Summit (AGRF) in September as part of the Pitch AgriHack 2022 finals.
The AGRF Agribusiness Deal Room, which will bring together more than 800 businesses, 15 government delegations, and 150 public and private investors, will host the finalist presentations.
Heifer International’s AYuTe Africa Challenge, a fourth invite-only category, will give up to $1.5 million in funding to scaleable projects that are already having a discernible impact on Africa’s smallholder farmers. The AGRF Summit will also showcase the 2022 AYuTe Africa Challenge winners.
