Are you an Agrifood SME based in East Africa, committed to transforming food system? Win USD 20 000 in prize.

Introduction
Small businesses play a pivotal role in the transition to more sustainable and equitable food systems. As part of the Agroecological Food Futures Prize, Biovision Foundation is looking for agri-food SMEs in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda that are impact focused and have strong growth potential. SMEs whose business models are aligned with the Principles of Agroecology and drive positive change in the areas of environmental sustainability, circularity, food security, social equity and/or local economic development are invited to join this competition. Businesses run by women and youth are especially encouraged to apply!

Applicants will go through a rigorous selection process with the chance of being among 6 finalists invited to attend a Pitching and Award Ceremony in Kigali towards the end of the year (exact date TBD).

All finalists will receive coaching to perfect their pitches that will be delivered at the ceremony before a jury of experts from the fields of investing,
development cooperation and finance, sustainable agriculture and food systems. The jury will evaluate finalists based on their profitability, growth and impact potential, and their alignment with agroecology. Three winners will be recipients of the following prizes:

1st Prize: USD 20 000
2nd Prize: USD 10 000 + customized technical assistance* (worth USD 5 000)
3rd Prize: USD 10 000

The technical assistance for the 2nd place winner, will be addressing a major pain point in their business. The specific type of technical assistance / service will be identified during the selection process.

In addition to the above prizes, all finalists will have the chance to connect with potential investors and donors during the Pitching and Award Ceremony, which will include a dedicated networking session. All finalists will also get access to a regional network of entrepreneurs with whom they can share knowledge, best practices, networks and opportunities.

Overview of selection process

  • The call for applications will close on 26th July 2024, after which an initial screening of all applications will be conducted.
  • The group of applicants that pass this screening will have their submitted business plans and financials assessed for business impact goals, ability to execute business strategy, good financial performance in recent years, and effective mitigation of business risks.
  • The 15 enterprises that score best will progress to the next stage, where owners / managers of applicant businesses will participate in virtual interviews. Through these interviews, a business health diagnostic will be run and a B-ACT assessment will be conducted to determine alignment with the Principles of Agroecology.
  • 10 successful contenders will then undergo an investment readiness diagnostic and risk assessment. Site visits will then take place to confirm claims made by business in their applications and throughout the process.
  •  6 finalists will be selected to travel to Pitching and Award Ceremony to pitch their businesses and investment asks. In preparation for this, these businesses will receive coaching on pitching.
  • 3 winners will be selected by the a jury of experts at the Pitching and Award Ceremony and receive their prizes.

Failure to provide all requested information and documents or the submission of false information will result in the disqualification of the applicant.
