With the complexities of animal diseases and animal food production, a close look is needed for food production in Africa. Recently, Mozambique has banned the import of beef, mutton and pork from neighboring South Africa because of an outbreak of the foot-and-mouth disease, the government said.

The ban also covers the import of live animals from South Africa, said Florência Cipriano, head of the Department of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

“We will intensify the measures to control the movement and transit of animals and products along the borders,” Cipriano said, adding that the foot-and-mouth disease was detected on Aug. 24 in the South African province of Limpopo, but was reported last Thursday.
