To discuss the National Livestock Transformation Programme and the State Level Project Socialization on Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) in the region, the Northern Governors Forum met with the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Mohammed Mahmood Abubakar.

Simon Bako Lalong, Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Plateau State, presided over the meeting, which took place at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja.

The governors of Kwara, Niger, Kebbi, and Kaduna as well as the deputy governors of Benue, Kogi, Bauchi, and Nasarawa states attended the meeting.

After the meeting, Governor Simon Lalong explained to reporters that the engagement was necessary due to the Northern Governors’ concerns about the implementation of the programs that directly affect the lives of the people.

He claimed that the poor pace of the National Livestock Transformation Programme’s execution, which was designed to address the problems facing farmers and herdsmen, is worrying the governors.

The Forum, he said, supports the creation of the new organization Livestock, Productivity and Resilience Project (L-PRES), which it believes complements the NLTP and will provide a beneficial outcome because agriculture is the mainstay of the North.

The conference, according to Lalong, was successful because the Governors received guarantees from the Minister of Agriculture that the Federal Government will keep carrying out all programs in collaboration with the States for the benefit of the populace.

Regarding security for farmers, he added that putting the programs into action would also aid in tackling the security issues that farmers were running into throughout their farming operations.

He asserts, “We are not slumbering on the subject of insecurity as it has been a matter of concern when in some locations farming activities have been disrupted. We are collaborating with other parties, in particular the security authorities, to figure out how to support farmers. Farmers right now will require a lot of our assurance and support to supply the country with food.

The meeting’s rehabilitation of the textile industry through the Northern Nigerian Development Company was also discussed, according to the meeting’s chairman, as a strategy to combat crime and unemployment.
